LEICESTER, Mass. - Hawks senior Kayla Dupree (North Bergen, N.J.) tallied 12 kills on .421 hitting as the Becker College women's volleyball team swept visiting Newbury College in straight sets (25-23, 25-8, 26-24) on Tuesday night at the Leicester Gymnasium in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Becker junior Sofia Cullina (Deep River, Conn.) finished with nine kills, ten digs, and two service aces. Freshman Joanna Bampi (Peabody, Mass.) added a team-high 21 digs on the night.
In the opening set, Becker looked to have had a strong hold on the set, but the Nighthawks pulled within two on a 6-1 scoring run. But a series of errors would cost the Nighthawks, giving Becker the first set, 25-23.
In the second, the Hawks used 13 team kills and a blazing .478 hitting percentage to score a 25-8 second set win.
In the third and final set, the sides remained even through most of the set until Becker used a small advantage of 22-17 to create some distance. However, the Nighthawks battled back, including defending three match points to tie the set 24-24. Back-to-back kills by Becker would end the set, completing the sweep with a 26-24 set win.
The Hawks improve to 11-9 (5-4 NECC) with that win while Newbury drops to 2-16 (0-8 NECC) with the loss.
The Nighthawks head out of conference for their next match, hosting Framingham State on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Pappas Gymnasium.
