BROOKLINE, Mass. - Lions junior Courtney McCarthy (Merrimack, N.H.) finished with a double-double of 13 kills and 14 digs, both team-highs, as the Eastern Nazarene Lions defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-11) on Wednesday evening in New England Collegiate Conference play.
McCarthy hit .344 from the floor with her 13 kills. Lions freshman Ruth Aguilar (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) added 10 kills and 16 assists, hitting .417 from the floor.
Nighthawks sophomore Monica Bolduk (Vernon, Conn.) finished with a team-high seven kills while classmate Stephanie Rheaume (Hampton, N.H.) had six kills. Freshman Sophia Ortiz (Arlington, Tenn.) had a match-high 30 digs.
In the opening set, the Lions used a 10-1 run to pull in front early 15-7. Following a Nighthawks timeout, the Nighthawks scored five straight, cutting the deficit to 15-12, forcing a Lions timeout. But, the Lions maintained their distance, using a 7-2 run after their timeout to close the door on the Nighthawks. Freshman Halle Julian (Whitman, Mass.) finished the set with a kill and a 25-17 set win.
In the second, Eastern Nazarene was off to a quick start with an 11-4 lead. The Lions used 14 team kills in the set en route to a 25-12 set win.
In the final set, the Lions again pulled out to an 11-4 lead and used a match-best .375 hitting percentage to sweep the match with their 25-11 third set win.
The Lions improve to 15-5 and remain unbeaten in the NECC at 6-0. Meanwhile, the Nighthawks fall to 2-14 (0-6 NECC) with the loss.
The Nighthawks return to action on Saturday, traveling to Mitchell for a match scheduled for noon. The Lions also return on Saturday, hosting a tri-match with Lesley and Fisher. Eastern Nazarene will face the Lynx at 11:00 a.m. and the Falcons at 3:00 p.m.
