Nighthawks Suffer Heartbreaking 3-2 Loss vs. Lesley

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Lynx freshman Maile Counts (Vista, Calif.) finished with a career-high 22 kills, leading the Lesley Lynx to a 3-2 (17-25, 20-25, 25-13, 25-21, 15-13) comeback win over the Newbury Nighthawks on Tuesday evening at Pappas Gymnasium in New England Collegiate Conference play.

Counts also added 15 digs while hitting .327 from the floor. Junior Cassidy Wygonik (Madison, Conn.) finished with 16 kills and a team-best 25 digs. Sophomore Jillian Russo (Watertown, Mass.) and freshman Merceidiz Diaz (Litchfield, N.H.) each had four aces.

Nighthawks sophomore Stephanie Rheaume (Hampton, N.H.) matched a season-high with 11 kills and added a season-best four blocks. Freshman Halie Sanders (McDonough, Ga.) finished with six kills, 14 digs, and 25 assists. Freshman Amanda Payne (Millis, Mass.) had a match-high 28 digs.

The Nighthawks held a three-point lead in the fifth set in trying to hold on for the win. The Lynx scored the next four points to take a 7-6 lead. The Nighthawks would respond to lead by a point at 11-10, but the Lynx used another short burst of scoring to take a 13-11 advantage. Counts would complete the comeback win with the final kill in the 15-13 set win.

The Nighthawks used substantial late-set scoring runs to win the first two sets and take a 2-0 lead. But the Lynx turned around the match in the third, hitting .370 from the field to win the set 25-13. Lesley forced the final set with the help of an 11-2 run in the fourth set, eventually winning the fourth 25-21.

The win moves the Lynx to 4-12 (1-4 NECC) while the loss drops the Nighthawks to 2-11 (0-4 NECC).

The Nighthawks return to play on Saturday with a tri-match with New England College and Rhode Island College, starting at 11:00 a.m.
