BRIGHTON, Mass. - Sharks senior Ciara Forde (Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore Cierra Martin (Rock Tavern, N.Y.) each scored a pair of goals, with Martin adding an assist, leading to the Simmons Sharks 5-0 win over the Newbury Nighthawks on Tuesday evening in non-conference play at Daly Field.
Sharks freshman Gabriella Cacia (Watertown, Mass.) also added a goal, the first of her career.
Martin began the scoring in the 25th minute with a perfect glancing header into the far post off a cross from senior Mikayla Elliott (Lowell, Mass.) The cross came from the right wing and was tucked into the far side netting by Martin, giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead.
Forde struck in the 35th minute, finding herself alone from 10 yards out. Senior Erin Fleming (West Boylston, Mass.) sent in a perfect ball, finding the feet of Forde, who found a pocket of open field. Forde executed successfully, giving the Sharks a 2-0 lead.
Simmons struck just before halftime off a corner kick. Elliott again assisted on the goal, which deflected around to find Martin. The shot hit the crossbar and bounced down and in, giving the Sharks a 3-0 lead and Martin her second goal of the night.
The Sharks added two more in the second half in their 5-0 shutout at a rain-soaked Daly Field.
Sharks senior Lauren Williams (Bowdoinham, Maine) takes the win, moving to 4-3 this season. Nighthawks senior Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) grabs the loss after making 14 saves on the night.
The Nighthawks fall to 1-8 this season while the Sharks have won five straight to move to 5-3.
Newbury has completed their non-conference schedule and can focus on their last seven games of the season, all in the New England Collegiate Conference. That NECC schedule starts Saturday as the Nighthawks travel to Southern Vermont for a 1:00 p.m. match.
