MEDFORD, Mass. - Pilgrims senior Michaela Pomeroy (Thetford, Vt.) and sophomore Paxton Couture (Rochester, N.H.) each scored for New England College, taking a 2-0 victory over the Newbury Nighthawks on Saturday in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Pomeroy started the scoring in the 17th minute. Pilgrims senior Emilie Nowakowski (Meriden, Conn.) sent a cross from the left side. The ball was deflected to Pomeroy who headed home her third goal of the season, giving the Pilgrims a 1-0 lead.
New England doubled the lead, adding insurance in the 75th minute. Sophomore Hailey Page (Lynn, Mass.) assisted on the goal with a well-timed cross that found Couture at the back post. Couture had virtually the entire net to shoot at, converting from just five yards away for her first goal of the season.
The Pilgrims created the majority of offensive chances but were turned away several times by Nighthawks senior goalie Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.). Sass finished with 21 saves on the afternoon and kept the Nighthawks within a goal with numerous skilled saves.
New England goalie, senior Kayla Pugliese (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) made one save on the day, improving to 3-3-1 this season.
The win lifts the Pilgrims to 4-4-1 (1-0-1 NECC) while the setback for the Nighthawks drops them to 1-7 (0-2 NECC).
