CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Norwich Cadets started their 2018 season on a strong note, scoring three goals in the first half, en route to a 4-0 victory over the Newbury Nighthawks on Friday afternoon at Skyline Park on opening day for both teams.
Cadets juniors Morgan Smith (Northfield, Vt.) and Kaila Lemmer (Barnard, Vt.) and freshmen Julia Koron (Pittsford, N.Y.) and Karyssa Lachance (Gorham, N.H) all scored for the visitors.
The Cadets struck in the eighth minute to take a 1-0 lead. A Cadets shot was saved by Sass on a dive to her left, but the rebound found the feet of Morgan Smith, who buried it in the open side for the opening score of the game.
Lemmer doubled the lead in the 18th minute, scoring on a cross from the left side, which she struck home from just outside 10 yards, giving the Cadets a 2-0 lead.
Koron struck just before halftime in the 42nd minute to give Norwich a 3-0 lead. Lachance and the Cadets would add one more in the 81st minute on their way to a 4-0 opening day win.
Cadets sophomore Katie Bishop-Manning (New York, N.Y.) got the nod in net for Norwich. Bishop-Manning made a pair of saves on the afternoon, moving to 1-0 this season. Sass falls to 0-1 despite the 18 save performance.
The Nighthawks travel to SUNY-Cobleskill for their next match, a Sunday afternoon contest at 2:00 p.m. The Cadets are back in action tomorrow afternoon for their home opener, a 4:00 p.m. game against Pine Manor.
