Boston, MA -- Senior Shannon Walsh (Massapequa, NY/ Massapequa) netted two goals to pace the Newbury Nighthawks for a 5-1 NECC conference victory over host Wheelock College Saturday afternoon. The brace marks the 40th and 41st career goals for Walsh who set a new school record for career goals. Walsh bested the mark previously held by Briana Tomaselli (2010-2011) who finished her career with 40 goals. The victory over the Wildcats also marked the first win in charge of the Nighthawks for Head Coach Lindsey Garvey.
"Shannon Walsh is a true competitor and her versatility on the field has been an in an incredible asset to this program. She has a natural ability for finding the net and battled to earn a career milestone today. I'm thrilled we were able to execute as a unit and proud of the team for securing a conference win." stated Coach Lindsey Garvey after the record-setting performance.
Freshman Hailey Shaw (Salem, NH/ Salem) collected her first career goal in the 66th minute and the Wildcats gifted Newbury two own goals en route to the Nighthawks first win of the season. Newbury outshot the host 17-15 including a 14-10 advantage in shots on goal.
In net, Noelle Sass (Randolph, MA/ Fontbonne Academy) made nine saves while allowing just one goal.
The Nighthawks will return to action Wednesday, September 27th when they host the University of St. Joseph's of Connecticut at Hellenic College. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
