MILTON, Mass. - Colonels sophomore Leona Stevens (Kingston, Mass.) scored a game-high four goals while freshman Katie Parker (Branford, Conn.) added a hat trick as the Curry Colonels defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 22-1 on Tuesday evening in non-conference play at Walter M. Katz Field.
Five other Colonels finished with two goals on the night, including sophomores Abby Dubel (Wolfeboro, N.H.), Courtney Lima (New Bedford, Mass.), and Abigail Roy (Nashua, N.H.). Dubel added four assists while Lima and Roy finished with three assists each.
Nighthawks freshman Venezia Delgadillo (Sharon, Mass.) scored the lone goal for Newbury. Delgadillo also finished with a team-high five draw controls and three caused turnovers. Freshman Hannah Gorham (Lyman, Maine) and Delgadillo each finished with a pair of ground balls.
The Colonels were out to a 4-0 lead in the opening three minutes. Four different Colonels scored to begin the game for Curry.
Delgadillo would add the Nighthawks goal to cut the deficit to 4-1, but the Colonels would outscore the Nighthawks 11-0 in the rest of the half to lead 15-1 after the opening 30 minutes. Stevens and Parker each finished with a hat trick in the first half.
The Colonels added seven more goals in the second half, including the pair by Dubel, leading Curry to their Opening Night win.
Nighthawks sophomore Keely Molloy (Staten Island, N.Y.) made a season-high 12 saves.
The win puts the Colonels at 1-0 while the loss drops the Nighthawks to 0-2.
The Nighthawks head north on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. game at Thomas College.
