BROOKLINE, Mass. – Newbury College Director of Athletics Jonathan Harper announced Tuesday the appointment of Annie O'Byrne as the Head Coach of Women's Lacrosse, effective immediately.
O'Byrne joins the staff with three seasons of collegiate coaching experience, all at Wheelock College, most recently as the Women's Lacrosse Head Coach. O'Byrne was responsible for academic and athletic player development, scouting, and recruiting, among several other tasks.
"We are thrilled to welcome Annie to Newbury to lead our women's lacrosse program. Her passion for the sport as a player and coach will significantly aid in the development of our new program both on the field and in the recruiting circuit," said Harper. "I am looking forward to the next chapter of Newbury Women's Lacrosse under Annie's leadership."
O'Byrne steps into the head coaching position as the Nighthawks women's lacrosse team begins its second season in program history.
"I am very excited to be joining the Newbury College Nighthawks this upcoming spring," said O'Byrne. "As we enter the program's second season, I am eager to continue growing and building on the hard work that has already been done. This is an important time for women in sport and I look forward to leading our student-athletes to success, both on and off the field."
The Nighthawks are currently scheduled to host Lyndon State College in their 2018 season opener on March 1. The Hornets also will be entering their second season in program history.
"We have great opportunity to build on the foundation of the program that was established in its first year," said O'Byrne. "We will continue to grow as we work towards becoming a perennial NECC contender."
Now residing in Boston, Mass., O'Byrne earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science & Government, with a minor in Biological Studies from Mount Holyoke College in 2013.
O'Byrne has additional experience in leadership positions. While at Mount Holyoke, she served as the Health Chair of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Since graduating in 2013, O'Byrne has also spent time in real estate as a property administrator and manager at BioMed Realty in Cambridge, Mass.
