HOLYOKE, Mass. - Nighthawks senior Taylor Kelley (North Attleboro, Mass.) scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds, helping the Newbury Nighthawks to their second straight win with a 56-37 win over the Bay Path Wildcats on Tuesday evening in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Kelley has been hitting her stride lately, scoring in double-figures in her last four games, including averaging 14.7 points in her last three games. Sophomore Jaymesha Sanders (West Haven, Conn.) scored 12 points to go with 10 rebounds in 30 minutes. Senior Kristen Connors (Wilmington, Mass.) added eight points.
Wildcats sophomore Emmeline Bronson (Shelton, Conn.) had a game-high 18 points to go with four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Senior Jo Nazario (Springfield, Mass.) added 13 points on 4-of-9 shooting and 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. Freshman Nyasia Reeves (Peekskill, N.Y.) matched a career-high with 17 rebounds.
The Nighthawks struggled to get going in the first half, shooting 11-of-34 in the opening 20 minutes and would only hold a two-point lead at the half, 24-22.
Newbury struck in the third quarter, outscoring the Wildcats by 12 while holding them to 29 percent shooting. The Nighthawks started the third on a 12-0 run with nine points coming from Kelley to take a 36-22 lead. The Nighthawks held that 14-point edge to the end of the third, leading 43-29.
Kelley, along with Sanders, sparked a Nighthawks run in the fourth, helping Newbury to their biggest lead of the game; 21-points following a Sanders layup and a 52-31 lead. Newbury cruised to the finish with the 56-37 win.
The win moves the Nighthawks to 9-12 (7-7 NECC) while the loss drops Bay Path to 1-16 (0-12 NECC).
The Nighthawks continue their season on Thursday, hosting Elms College at Pappas Gymnasium with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Bay Path hosts New England Colleg on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
