BROOKLINE, Mass. - Cadets senior Emily Oliver (Sagamore Hills, Ohio) stuffed the stat sheet full with 17 points, nine assists, eight rebounds, and four steals as the Norwich Cadets defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 68-48 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.
Oliver's nine assists are a career-high. Sophomore Riley Bennett (Hopkinton, N.H.) added 13 points. Senior Vanessa Fleury (Lebanon, N.H.) finished with 11 points, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.
Nighthawks sophomore Tatianna Occena (Spring Valley, N.Y.) scored a season-high 15 points, including 4-for-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Senior Savannah Olsen (Battle Creek, Mich.) had nine points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
The Nighthawks struggled in the opening 10 minutes while the Cadets used a 16-0 run spanning 5:10 to take a 20-3 lead in the late first quarter. The Cadets would add to their lead by the end of the quarter, holding a 28-8 lead. Norwich shot 10-for-14 in the opening quarter; Bennett had nine points.
Norwich continued the pressure, leading by as many as 24 in the second quarter. The Nighthawks did cut into the deficit, getting within 15 at one point, before trailing 42-23 at the half.
The Cadets maintained their double-digit lead for the second half, with Newbury only getting as close as 15 points in the second half as Norwich starts their 2019 with a 68-48 win.
The Cadets move to 5-6 with the win while the Nighthawks drop to 5-7 in the loss.
Norwich returns to play on Tuesday as they travel to Johnson & Wales for a 5:30 game. The Nighthawks make their return on Thursday, traveling to Elms College for a 7:00 p.m. tip.
