Nighthawks Drop First Game Back, Lose to Vassar at Naismith Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Five players finished with at least 11 points on New Year's Eve as the Vassar Brewers defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 88-57 on Monday evening in the Naismith Invitational, hosted by Springfield College.

Brewers junior Isa Puczah (Willington, Conn.) scored a team-high 16 points. Freshman Dani Douglas (Kalispell, Mont.) scored 14 points in 17 minutes off the bench. Junior Sophie Nick (Denver, Colo.) added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Nighthawks sophomore Jaymesha Sanders (West Haven, Conn.) scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Seniors Savannah Olsen (Battle Creek, Mich.) and Taylor Kelley (North Billerica, Mass.) finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

The Brewers began the game on a 24-3 run on the way to leading 30-6 after the first quarter. Vassar shot 11-for-19 (57.9%) in the opening quarter.

Over the next two quarters, Vassar outscored Newbury 44-35 to lead 74-41 after three quarters.

The Brewers finished the game shooting a season-high 48.5 percent in their 88-57 win to advance to the Championship game.

Vassar improves to 7-2 this season while the Nighthawks drop down to 5-5.

The Nighthawks return to action tomorrow, facing Bates College in the Consolation Game of the Naismith Invitational at 1:00 p.m. The Brewers advance to the Championship Game and will face the host, Springfield College, at 3:00 p.m.
