Nighthawks Fall to Becker, 62-56, in Final Game Before Break

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Hawks senior Ciara McKissick (Charlton, Mass.) scored a season-high 20 points on 7-for-12 shooting in a full 40 minutes, leading the Hawks offense in their 62-56 victory over the Newbury Nighthawks on Friday night in New England Collegiate Conference play.

McKissick added nine rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Junior Cassidy Harrison (Foxborough, Mass.) was in foul trouble much of the night but still managed 15 points in 20 minutes. Senior Allie Ablondi (Thompson, Conn.) added 11 points off the bench.

Nighthawks senior Taylor Kelley (North Billerica, Mass.) scored a team-high 13 points on 4-for-7 shooting. Senior Savannah Olsen (Battle Creek, Mich.) scored 12 points and added nine rebounds. Sophomore Tatianna Occena (Spring Valley, N.Y.) finished with 10 points.

Tied at 37-37 in the third quarter, it was McKissick who led Becker on an 8-0 run in the final 1:32 to take a 45-37 lead into the final quarter. McKissick scored all eight points in the run, shooting 4-for-4 and making all of her layups to give Becker an eight-point lead.

Becker held off the Nighthawks for much of the fourth, but Newbury fought back into the game with a 9-2 run in just about a minute to trail by two, 54-52 with 1:47 remaining.

Becker pulled ahead by six with under a minute to go, but the Nighthawks again cut the deficit to a pair with an Olsen layup to trail 58-56.

Down the stretch, Harrison shot 4-for-4 from the line, finally finishing off the Nighthawks in Becker's 62-56 win.

The win moves Becker to 6-4 (3-1 NECC) while the loss drops Newbury to 5-4 (3-3 NECC).

Both teams enter the winter break in the top half of the NECC standings. Newbury will return to play on Dec. 31 in the Naismith Invitational, hosted by Springfield College, as they play Vassar College at 3:00 p.m. Becker returns after the New Year, hosting Regis College on Jan. 5 at 1:00 p.m.
