MEDFORD, Mass. - A 51-21 scoring run between the second and third quarters provided plenty of distance as the Newbury Nighthawks took down the Lesley Lynx, 76-49 on Tuesday night in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Nighthawks senior Savannah Olsen (Battle Creek, Mich.) and sophomore Jaymesha Sanders (West Haven, Conn.) each scored 14 points. Sanders added 12 rebounds for a double-double. Senior Taylor Kelley (North Billerica, Mass.) finished with eight points. Senior Kristen Connors (Wilmington, Mass.) and freshman Jada Gee (Springfield, Mass.) scored seven points each off the bench. Gee added 10 rebounds.
Lynx junior Dakota Jones (Torrance, Calif.) and sophomore Karyn McEvoy (Quincy, Mass.) each finished with 12 points. Jones pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Graduate student Theresa Pereira (Hopedale, Mass.) scored nine points.
Holding a 15-12 lead after the first quarter, the Nighthawks used a 14-1 run spanning 3:53 in the second quarter to take a 36-19 lead. The Nighthawks outscored the Lynx 30-12 in the second and shot 11-for-22 from the field and 8-of-10 from the line in the 30-point quarter.
The Nighthawks added to their lead in the third with the help of a 12-0 run late in the quarter. The Nighthawks shot 9-for-17 in the third, outscoring the Lynx 21-9 overall.
Newbury finished with a 27-point victory, their largest margin of victory this season.
The win moves the Nighthawks to 3-2 (1-1 NECC) while the loss drops the Lynx to 0-5 (0-2 NECC).
The Nighthawks and Lynx both resume their seasons on Thursday. The Nighthawks host Bay Path University in NECC play at 7:00 p.m. while the Lynx host a non-conference match against Rivier University at 8:00 p.m.
