KEENE, N.H. - Nighthawks sophomore Jaymesha Sanders (West Haven, Conn.) scored a team-high 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting, leading the Newbury offense in their first win of the season, 78-67 over the Anna Maria AMCATS on Saturday afternoon in the Zero Gravity Tip-Off Tournament Consolation Game.
Nighthawks freshman Chametria Manuel (Mobile, Ala.) added 15 points on 5-for-10 shooting. Senior Savannah Olsen (Battle Creek, Mich.) finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Sophomore Tatianna Occena (Spring Valley, N.Y.) had a career-high seven steals.
AMCATS junior Sierra Johnson (Brockton, Mass.) scored a game-high 25 points on 10-for-17 shooting in 22 minutes. Junior Sienna Johnson (Brockton, Mass.) added 20 points on 5-for-13 shooting and 9-of-12 from the line.
The Nighthawks controlled from the opening tip, outscoring the AMCATS 23-6 in the first quarter. The Nighthawks shot 9-for-17, including 3-for-8 from deep, in the opening quarter.
Newbury expanded that lead in the second quarter, holding an advantage that stretched to 23 points.
The AMCATS battled back to trail by seven after three quarters, but the Nighthawks were able to close out and hold off Anna Maria for the 11-point win.
The win moves the Nighthawks to 1-1 while the loss drops Anna Maria to 0-2.
The Nighthawks return to play on Saturday, Nov. 17 as they travel to UMaine Farmington for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
