KEENE, N.H. -- Maine Maritime Academy women's basketball outscored Newbury College 23-10 in the first quarter to sail to the 81-40 non-conference victory on Friday night at the Keene State College Tip-Off Tournament.
How It Happened: The Mariners held a 40-24 lead at halftime, and never looked back, holding the Nighthawks to single digits in both the third and fourth quarters.
Inside the Numbers: Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) led the Mariners with 15 points, five rebounds and a steal, while Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.), Megan McLean (Eliot. Maine), and Sydney Underhill-Tilton (Richmond, Maine) each chipped in with 10 points. Felix added two rebounds and an assist, McLean added three steals and two rebounds, and Underhill-Tilton contributed four rebounds, two steals, and an assist.
Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) led the Mariners with six rebounds, while Deirdre Sanborn (Standish, Maine) led the team with five assists.
Jaymesha Sanders (West Haven, Conn.) led Newbury with 11 points, nine rebounds, two steals and a block.
The Mariners shot 42.6 percent from the floor, while the Nighthawks shot 24.5 percent. Maine Maritime held a 38-26 advantage in rebounds.
Up Next: The Mariners improve to 1-0 on the season and will take on the Keene State College tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. in the tournament championship game. The Nighthawks will play in the consolation game against Anna Maria at 1:00 p.m.
