SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Nighthawks freshman Jaymesha Sanders (West Haven, Conn.) was named the New England Women's Basketball Association Rookie of the Week for the third time in the 2017-2018 season following a week of averaging 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Sanders joins Kristen Curley of Southern Maine as the only freshman to be named NEWBA Rookie of the Week three times this season.
Sanders began her week with a 12 point game on 5-of-10 shooting in just 13 minutes at Lesley on Tuesday. She followed that performance with a 22 point, 17 rebound, six steal game at Bay Path on Saturday. For the week, Sanders shot 15-for-25 from the field in a pair of Nighthawks wins.
Nighthawks senior Destiny Spears (Arnold, Md.) found a place on the NEWBA Honor Roll thanks to a near triple-double on Tuesday and 22 points and 18 rebounds on Saturday.
The Nighthawks finished the season 17-8 (14-2 New England Collegiate Conference) and were named the top-seed in the upcoming NECC Playoffs. The 17 wins are the most since 1999-2000 while the 14 NECC wins are the most conference wins in program history.
As the No. 1 seed, the Nighthawks receive a bye in the first round with home-court advantage and will await the winner of No. 5 Wheelock College and No. 4 Elms College for a semifinal contest on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
