Brookline, Mass - The Newbury College closed out their pre-thanksgiving slate with a 71-61 loss at the hands of the New England College Pilgrims Tuesday night at Pappas Gymnasium on the campus of Hellenic College. With the loss, the Nighthawks fall to 2-2 on the year while NEC improves to 2-1.
NEC held a 20-11 lead after the 1st quarter before heading into halftime leading 39-19. 13 first-half turnovers for the Nighthawks were the cause of much Newbury's woes. In the first twenty minutes of action, the New England College bench outscored their Newbury College counterparts 7-5 while the Pilgrims held a decisive 16-4 point in the paint advantage.
Rene Hudson led all first-half scores with 21 points including a buzzer-beating three-pointer to end the 2nd quarter. Hudson was 8-of-20 from the floor in the first half and 5-of-14 from behind the arc.
Newbury's Tatiana Occena was Newbury's pacemaker at the break with seven first-half points on 3-of-5 shooting.
The Nighthawks shot just 23.1% (6-26) in the first half while New England College went 16-of-42 from the floor (38.1%). The Pilgrims outrebounded the Nighthawks 27-20 through the first two quarters while turning the ball over just seven times.
The Nighthawks started off the second half on a torrid pace, outscoring NEC 24-17 to close the gap to 13 points entering the 4th quarter. The Nighthawks would outscore NEC again in the 4th but this time only by 3, 18-15, in route to the 10 point defeat.
Hudson finished the night with a game-high 27 points for the Pilgrims while Destiny Spears (Arnold, Maryland) paced the Nighthawks with 20 points on 8-of-20 shooting. Spears added 12 rebounds and three assists to her performance.
The Nighthawks return to action on November 29th when they travel to Framingham State University for a 6:00 PM tip-off.
