Nighthawks Swept at Lesley on Friday Evening

MILTON, Mass. - Lesley's offense in game one was the story while a one-hit shutout in game two lifted the Lesley Lynx to a two-game sweep over the Newbury Nighthawks on Friday evening in New England Collegiate Conference play.

Game One: Lesley 11 - Newbury 5

The Lesley Lynx offense exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second, creating plenty of room in their six-run win in game one over the Newbury Nighthawks, 11-5.

Lynx junior Ally Murphy (Raynham, Mass.) batted 3-for-4, all singles, with four RBIs. Sophomore Jordan Day (Seminole, Fla.) went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a double. Senior Ashleigh Acker (Apopka, Fla.) finished 3-for-4, all singles, with two runs scored.

Nighthawks freshman Caroline Mahoney (Easton, Mass.) batted 1-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Senior Alexis Vieira (Pawtucket, R.I.) finished 1-for-2 with a run scored.

The Lynx entered the bottom of the second leading 1-0 and loaded the bases with the first three batters to begin the inning. A sacrifice fly, wild pitch, and error made it 4-0, followed by a two-run single by Murphy to give Lesley a 6-0 lead. Lesley capped the inning with an RBI single by sophomore Kristen DiCicco (Wantagh, N.Y.) to lead 7-0.

The Nighthawks responded with the next five runs, starting with a three-run third thanks to Mahoney's bases-clearing double to cut the deficit to 7-3. Newbury scored twice more in the fourth on an RBI groundout and wild pitch to trail 7-5.

But the Lynx pulled away in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by senior Jordan Raab (Rochester, N.H.), followed by another two-run single by Murphy, giving the Lynx a 10-5 edge. Lesley added one more run in the bottom of the fifth on Day's RBI single to right field to give the Lynx an 11-5 lead.

Day pitched 5.2 innings, allowing five runs, four earned on two hits while striking out six and improving to 9-7 on the season. Nighthawks freshman Kiana Hinson (La Habra, Calif.) was given the loss to drop to 5-9.

Game Two: Lesley 9 - Newbury 0 (Final - 5 Innings)

The Lynx offense continued to roll in game two, sweeping the doubleheader in a 9-0 win over the Nighthawks.

Lesley's Jordan Day batted 1-for-3 with a grand slam in the second. Sophomore Riley Pickett (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and freshman Mahlia Medina (Winchester, Calif.) both had a hit and two RBIs each.

Nighthawks freshman Caroline Mahoney was the only Nighthawks to draw a hit in game two, finishing 1-for-2.

Leading 1-0, the Lynx loaded the bases in the second with two walks and a single as Day stepped in. The grand slam went to straight-away center, clearing the bases to give the Lynx a 5-0 lead.

A third inning error by the Nighthawks gave Lesley two more runs to lead 7-0. The Lynx closed out the game in the fifth on a triple by Medina, shutting out the Nighthawks in game two.

Lynx freshman Jen Thorburn (Groton, Mass.) had the best appearance of her career, going five innings, allowing just the one hit. Thorburn improves to 8-4 on the year.

The sweep lifts the Lynx to 19-13 (7-5 NECC) while Newbury drops to 8-19 (5-5 NECC) with the pair of losses.

The Nighthawks return on Monday, hosting Becker College for NECC play beginning at 3:00 p.m.
