Nighthawks Drop Doubleheader to Husson on Saturday

GAME ONE: Husson 8 - Newbury 0 (F/5)

WATERVILLE, Maine - Husson junior Olivia Smith (Calais, Maine) finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs as the Husson Eagles defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 8-0 in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

Smith's 3-for-4 day included a triple and home run. Eagles freshman Madelyn Fowler (East Barre, Vt.) also finished 3-for-4 on the day. Sophomore Tamara Aunchman (Panton, Vt.) batted 2-for-2 with a double.

Nighthawks junior Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) and senior Samantha Libby (New Gloucester, Maine) were the only two to draw a hit off Husson pitching in the first game.

The Eagles jumped out to a three-run advantage with a three-run home run by Smith in the bottom of the first. Freshman Kendra Wilson (Salem, N.H.) added an RBI single, giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead after one inning. 

After adding a run in the third, the Eagles closed out the game in the fifth with a two-run triple by Smith to win the opening game 8-0.

Eagles sophomore Jen Jones (Acton, Maine) takes the win, pitching five innings and allowing two hits to improve to 1-3. Nighthawks sophomore Mallory Stefan (Thornton, Colo.) takes the loss, falling to 3-5 this season.

 

GAME TWO: Husson 5 - Newbury 3

WATERVILLE, Maine - Eagles sophomore Chloe Gorey (Scarborough, Maine) batted 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, helping the Husson Eagles to a 5-3 win over the Newbury Nighthawks, completing the two-game sweep of Newbury on Saturday afternoon.

Eagles junior Olivia Smith (Calais, Maine) batted 1-for-3 with a double. Junior Kylie Cunningham (Bangor, Maine) batted 1-for-2 with a double. 

Nighthawks junior Alina Milauskas (Elkridge, Md.) finished 1-for-4 with a double. Freshman Elizabeth Duanys (Worcester, Mass.) finished 1-for-2 with a double.

The Nighthawks jumped out to a quick lead, scoring their three runs in the opening inning. Nighthawks junior Noelle Sass (Randolph, Mass.) gave the Nighthawks a 1-0 lead on a single that scored Milauskas. A single by junior Alexis Vieira (Pawtucket, R.I.) followed by an Eagles error gave the Nighthawks a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.

The Eagles chipped away with a run in the bottom of the first and second to trail 3-2.

In the bottom of the third, Smith's double tied the game at 3-3 and sophomore Tamara Aunchman (Panton, Vt.)  gave Husson the lead with an RBI single that scored Gorey for a 4-3 lead.

Husson added insurance in the sixth on an RBI double by Cunningham to lead 5-3.

Eagles sophomore Jen Jones (Acton, Maine) gets the win to improve to 2-3. Nighthawks sophomore Mallory Stefan (Thornton, Colo.) takes the loss, falling to 3-6.

The Nighthawks return with a doubleheader against UMaine-Farmington on Sunday afternoon.
