Brookline, Mass. – Newbury College's softball team finished the 2016 season as the NCAA Division III statistical champion for runs per game. Individually, Newbury Nighthawk Centerfielder Sheri Liggiero earned NCAA statistical champion honors in the same category, leading the nation by averaging 1.68 runs per game.
"I am very proud of Sheri and the Softball team for earning these well-deserved awards," said Newbury College Director of Athletics Jonathan Harper. "Sheri and the team's successes are the culmination of hard work and dedication both on and off the field. These awards emphasize the successes our student-athletes have had, and highlight those who help lead our Nighthawk Nation."
Starting all 34 games in centerfield for the Nighthawks during the 2016 season, Liggiero posted a career single-season best .538 (63-117) with 15 doubles, three triples, 33 RBI and 20 walks. She was named the 2016 New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Player of the Year, the 2016 Newbury College Female Nighthawk of the Year, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III All-Region Second Team, and was selected to the All-NECC First Team in the outfield.
Liggiero, who collected 54 total runs this past season, batted .609 (39-64) her senior year with 12 doubles, one triple and 21 RBI against conference opponents. She led the NECC in batting average (.538), on-base percentage (.596), hits (63), runs (54), doubles (15) and walks (20), and registered a team-leading 22 multiple hit games, including 12 two-hit games, seven three-hit games and three four-hit games.
"This recognition is something truly special for Newbury College's softball team and for Sheri Liggiero," said Newbury College President Joseph L. Chillo LP.D. "Their hard work and dedication exemplify the important qualities of Division III student-athletes and the expectations that we have for our Nighthawks. While this type of national recognition is not the first for our women's softball team, I know each Lady Nighthawk will look back on this accomplishment with fond memories."
Liggiero and the team will receive a plaque from the NCAA as the statistical champions for runs per game.
