NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Nighthawks Men's and Women's Cross Country teams participated in their second race of the season, with both teams recording a third-place finish in Saturday morning's Mitchell College Invitational 5k.

The meet gave both teams an opportunity to see what they are up against later this season in the New England Collegiate Conference Championship as Elms, Mitchell, Dean, and Lesley all participated in the event.

For the men's side, sophomore Geralson Withrow (Mystic, Conn.), who lost his right shoe in the first 100 meters of the race, set the pace with his 10th place time of 17:23.1. Withrow finished only three seconds behind his personal best 5k time, which he set in last season's event. Sophomore David Jean (Malden, Mass.) recorded a 22nd place finish with a time of 19:10.5, a new personal best. The freshman pair of Joan Guzman (Nantucket, Mass.) and Anthony Crocco (Trumbull, Conn.) finished 25th and 26th, respectively.

For the women's team, sophomore Hamido Hassan (Lewiston, Maine) finished in 16th place with her time of 23:16.7, a personal best 5k time. Sophomore Mary Jok (Lynn, Mass.) and freshmen Sharika Henriquez (Haverhill, Mass.) and Averie Greeley (Ledyard, Conn.) were just behind with finishes of 18th, 20th, and 21st, respectively.

For the teams, the men's third-place finish came with 86 points, which was 10 more than Dean College (76), who finished best among NECC schools. The women's third-place finish with 73 points was six more than Elms (67), who was the best NECC finisher in the women's race.

Two weeks until the Nighthawks return for action, traveling to the Community College of Rhode Island Tri-State Open on Sept. 29.
