Nighthawks Open Season at Suffolk Mini-Meet Invitational

BARRINGTON, Mass. - A trio of teams started their 2018 Cross Country campaigns on Friday morning, marking the earliest start to the season in Nighthawks history. Newbury, along with Suffolk and Lasell, competed in the Mini-Meet consisting of a 3k for the women and a 5k for the men.

Nighthawks sophomore Hamido Hassan (Lewiston, Maine) earned the best finish for the Nighthawk women, finishing her 3k in a personal-best time of 13:40.3, good for sixth position. Freshman newcomer Averie Greeley (Ledyard, Conn.) took 10th place in the meet with her time of 14:20.4. Fellow freshman Shakira Henriquez (Haverhill, Mass.) finished just behind Greeley with a time of 14:33.5, placing 12th in her first meet of the season.

For the Nighthawks men, 2017 New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Year Geralson Withrow (Mystic, Conn.), now a sophomore, got his season off to a solid start with a seventh-place finish and a 5k time of 18:49.2. Newcomer, freshman Joan Guzman (Nantucket, Mass.), cracked the top-10 with his time of 20:30.4 while sophomore David Jean (Malden, Mass.) finished right after Guzman with his time of 20:31.5. Guzman placed 10th, Jean one position behind in 11th.

The Nighthawks have two weeks off from competition and will return to action on Sept. 15 at the Mitchell College Invite in New London, Conn.
