QUINCY, Mass. - The fourth-seeded Eastern Nazarene College men's volleyball team claimed a 3-0 (25-10, 25-23, 25-18) victory over No. 5 seed Newbury Tuesday evening at the Lahue Physical Education Center to advance to the NECC Tournament semifinals for the second-straight season.
The Lions improve to 15-15 on the year with the win and will travel to top-seeded, nationally-ranked Elms in the NECC Tournament semifinals Thursday, April 11. The Nighthawks finish the season with a 7-19 overall record with the loss.
For the Lions, Tim Eddings (Endicott, N.Y.) posted a match-high 13 kills to go with a pair of service aces on the night. Arthur Kossoski (Malden, Mass.) notched 11 kills and five digs while James Hoopes (Lenexa, Kan.) chipped in with nine kills. Brandon Jenkins (Norton, Mass.) tallied 34 assists and eight digs.
Nighthawks freshman Pedro Juan De Jesus (East Hartford, Conn.) finished with a team-high six kills and 11 digs. Sophomores Rory Dobbins (Warwick, R.I.) and Alvin Fernandes (Taunton, Mass.) added four and three kills, respectively.
The home side rolled to a 25-10 win in the opening set to capture a 1-0 lead. ENC combined for 13 team kills on 20 attempts with one error to hit a blazing .600 from the floor.
Eastern Nazarene rallied from an 18-13 deficit to edge Newbury 25-23 in the second frame to widen the margin to 2-0. The Nighthawks squandered their best opportunity of the match after the Lions embarked on a 9-1 run to take control of the set.
The Lions locked up the program's first-ever postseason victory with a 25-18 decision in the third. ENC closed the match winning five of the last six points to advance to Thursday's Semifinals.
