CHICOPEE, Mass. - The No. 13 Elms College Blazers spread the offense around on Saturday afternoon as they picked up a straight sets (25-12, 25-14, 25-12) victory over the Newbury Nighthawks at the Picknelly Center in New England Collegiate Conference play.
The Blazers were led by sophomore Jeremy Torres (Juncos, P.R.) and his seven kills. His brother, sophomore Jovanny Torres (Juncos, P.R.) added five kills on six attempts, hitting .667 from the floor. Senior Jake Johnson (Warwick, R.I.) finished with four kills.
Nighthawks sophomore Rory Dobbins (Warwick, R.I.) led the team with five kills. Freshman Pedro Juan De Jesus (East Hartford, Conn.) added four kills for Newbury. Sophomore Jeremias Soto (Lawrence, Mass.) finished with 10 assists and eight digs.
In the opening set, the Blazers used 16 team kills and hit .400 from the floor, winning the set 25-14. Elms pulled away in the first set with the help of a 13-3 scoring run to lead 1-0 in sets.
In the second, it was an 11-2 run used by the Blazers to pull away in the set after Newbury held an early three-point lead. After 10 team kills and hitting .120 from the floor, the Blazers took the second set 25-12 from Newbury.
In the final set, both teams struggled for offense, combining for 17 errors, but it was Elms who would triumph 25-14 in the set, sweeping the Nighthawks in straight sets.
The Blazers improve to 21-4 (7-1 NECC) with the win while the loss drops the Nighthawks to 6-15 (5-6 NECC).
Newbury returns to play on Wednesday, travelling to Dean College for a 7:00 p.m.
