In the opening set, a 12-5 scoring run set up set point for the Bison, who looked poised to win the first set in easy fashion. But the Nighthawks defended set point on six straight occasions before succumbing to the Nichols attack, as the Bison won the set 25-22.
In the second, Nichols was out in front from the start, winning 11 of the first 13 points to lead 11-2. Nichols kept plenty of breathing room in their 25-14 set win.
In the final set, the Bison hit a match-best .421 from the floor as the Nighthawks offense struggled. Nichols handed Newbury their worst set loss of the season, as the Nighthawks fell 25-4 in the final set.
Match Two: No. 12 Endicott 3 - Newbury 0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-14)
The No. 12 Endicott Gulls spread the offense around as they defeated the Newbury Nighthawks in straight sets (25-19, 25-16, 25-14) in the final match of the afternoon from Pappas Gymnasium in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Gulls junior Donovan Dey (Fairport, N.Y.) led Endicott with nine kills. Senior Matt Bozek (Exeter, N.H.) added eight kills. Seniors Conner Holland (Derry, N.H.), Jacob Newman Chester, N.H.), and sophomore Erich Roman (Glastonbury, Conn.) all finished with five kills.
In the opening set, the Nighthawks held a lead of 14-12 over the 12th-ranked team in Division III. But from there, the Gulls righted the ship, going on a 9-1 run to overtake the lead, 21-15. Endicott would see out the set with a Newman kill to win the set 25-19.
In the second, the Nighthawks hung around for much of the set before a 6-0 scoring run by Endicott created a 23-14 lead. Roman finished out the set with a kill as the Gulls won the second 25-16.
In the final set, Endicott was out in front early as the Gulls hit 14-of-27 (.519) with no errors in the set in their 25-14 set win over the Nighthawks.
