BROOKLINE, Mass. - Blazers sophomore Jeremy Torres (Juncos, PR) was one of five Blazers with at least six kills, leading the team with 10 kills, as the No. 15 Elms Blazers defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 3-0 (25-8, 25-8, 25-10) on Wednesday evening in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Jeremy Torres' brother, sophomore Jovanny Torres (Juncos, PR) had nine kills, senior Jake Johnson (Warwick, R.I.) added eight kills, junior Pablo Ortiz (Newington, Conn.) finished with seven kills while sophomore Antonio Delgado (Aibonito, PR) chipped in six kills.
Nighthawks sophomore Rory Dobbins (Warwick, R.I.) finished with a team-high five kills. Freshman Pedro Juan De Jesus (East Hartford, Conn.) added three kills while junior Michael Weston (West Greenwich, Conn.) finished with a pair of kills.
The opening set began with Elms winning the first 13 points of the match. The Blazers hit .647 from the floor with 12 team kills in their 25-8 first set win.
In the second, the Blazers used an opening score of 18-4 to control the set. Elms hit .500 in the set, winning the second 25-8. Jeremy Torres was a perfect six kills in six attempts after two sets.
In the final set, a 10-1 run was a difference maker for the Blazers on their way to a straight-sets sweep and a 25-10 set win. Elms finished with 19 team kills in the final set and 44 kills in the match. The Blazers also finished the night hitting .493 from the floor.
The win for the 15th ranked Blazers is their fifth win in a row and moves them to 15-3 (4-0 NECC). The loss is Newbury's first conference loss of the season and sets them back to 3-10 (2-1 NECC).
The Nighthawks return to play on Friday with a conference match against Southern Vermont at 6:00 p.m. at Pappas Gymnasium.
The Blazers return on Saturday with a tri-match and some stiff competition ahead. They will travel to Beverly, Mass. for an 11:00 a.m. conference match against the No. 11 Endicott Gulls and then face Vassar College at 1:00 p.m.
