BROOKLINE, Mass. - Nighthawks sophomore Rory Dobbins (Warwick, R.I.) finished the match with 17 kills, matching his career high and leading the Nighthawks to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-18) straight sets win over the Dean Bulldogs on Tuesday night in New England Collegiate Conference play.

Dobbins hit .500 from the floor on the night and added five digs and two aces. Freshman Pedro Juan De Jesus (East Hartford, Conn.) finished with seven kills, eight assists, and 13 digs. Sophomore Alvin Fernandez (Taunton, Mass.) added four kills and 13 digs.

Bulldogs freshman John Kauffman (East Providence, R.I.) finished with a team-high 10 kills while hitting .226 on the night. Sophomore Aaron Brody (Webster, Mass.) added seven kills.

The opening set was all Nighthawks as they jumped out to an 11-4 lead. The Bulldogs would only get as close as six points as Newbury ran away in the late stages for the 25-18 set win. The Nighthawks had 11 team kills in the first, hitting just under .200 from the floor.

In the second, the early going was competitive on both sides with Dean coming out to a 12-10 lead. But the Nighthawks strung together a scoring run of 11-2, taking command of the second set with a 21-14 lead. The Nighthawks had 13 team kills in the set, winning the second 25-17.

In the third, Dean would again be the aggressors in the early stages, coming away with another 12-10 lead. Newbury would string together the same 11-2 run from that point to take a 21-14 lead. The Bulldogs did fight back with four straight points to trail 21-18, but Newbury answered with the final four points to win the set 25-18.

The win moves the Nighthawks to 3-8 (2-0 NECC) while the loss drops the Bulldogs to 1-7 (0-1 NECC).

Next for the Nighthawks is a non-conference match against Lasell on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday with a tri-match at Nichols against the Bison and Elms College.
