Nighthawks Downed by Wildcats in Straight Sets

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Wildcats junior Josh Pitzer (North Kingstown, R.I.) finished with a team-high nine kills, hitting .500 from the floor, leading the Johnson & Wales Wildcats to a 3-0 (25-9, 25-9, 25-14) victory over the Newbury Nighthawks on Saturday evening in non-conference play.

Wildcats senior Cameron Ponce (San Jose, Calif.) added seven kills on 11 attempts, with one error, to hit .545 on the night. Senior Donovan Kelley (Encinitas, Calif.) finished with five kills while freshman Ben Sandt (East Northport, N.Y.) had 30 assists.

Nighthawks sophomore Rory Dobbins (Warwick, R.I.) finished with a team-high eight kills and hit .208 from the floor. Freshman Pedro Juan De Jesus (East Hartford, Conn.) added five kills and one ace. Sophomore Jeremias Soto (Lawrence, Mass.) had 15 assists.

The opening set belonged to the Wildcats with a 6-1 run to start the set, followed by an 8-1 run in the middle portion, en route to a 25-9 set win. JWU finished the first with 13 team kills while hitting .500 from the floor.

In the second, large scoring runs again helped the Wildcats on their way to a carbon-copy of the first set in the 25-9 win. JWU again finished with 13 total kills in the set and hit .370.

In the third, the Nighthawks hung tough for the early and middle portions of the set, but the Wildcats closed the hopes of a comeback with a 6-0 run on the way to the straight set sweep and 25-14 set win. JWU went for a .375 hitting percentage to end the night.

The win is the Wildcats fifth in a row and moves them to 5-1. The Nighthawks fall to 0-5 with the setback.

Newbury welcomes Emerson College on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. for their next match. The Wildcats press on with conference play on Wednesday, hosting Regis College for a 7:00 p.m. match.
