Nighthawks Battle Falls Short in Straight Sets Loss at Wentworth

BOSTON - Leopards freshman Drew Potter (Towson, Md.) finished with a career-high nine kills and three aces, leading the Wentworth Institute of Technology's offense in their straight sets win (25-10, 25-20, 25-20) over the Newbury Nighthawks on Thursday evening in non-conference play.

Leopards juniors Scott Skarzynski (Webster, N.Y.) and Xhuljo Zyba (Holbrook, Mass.) each finished with six kills. Freshman Connor Adams (Budd Lake, N.J.) finished with added a career-high 19 assists.

Nighthawks sophomore Rory Dobbins (Warwick, R.I.) led the team with eight kills while hitting .333 from the floor. Junior Michael Weston (West Greenwich, R.I.) added four kills.

The opening set was all Wentworth, who started the set with a 6-0 run. The Leopards hit .474 in the first with 10 total team kills to win the first set 25-10.

In the second, the Nighthawks fell behind early but stayed well within striking distance, trailing 15-13 in the middle of the set. Wentworth scored the next four points to gain control of the set. Despite Newbury's .333 hitting percentage from the floor, the Leopards took the second set 25-20.

In the third, the Nighthawks and Leopards constantly traded points back-and-forth throughout the set. The Leopards managed a small window of momentum in the late going to hold a four-point lead, 22-18. Wentworth closed out the set on miscues by the Nighthawks, giving the Leopards the 25-20 set win.

The victory moves Wentworth to 2-1 while the Nighthawks drop to 0-2. 

The Nighthawks are back in action on Saturday, traveling to Colby-Sawyer College for a 1:00 p.m. game.
