Nighthawks Fall in Season Opener, 3-0 vs. CCNY

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Beavers sophomore Xhuilo Myftari (Durres, Albania) finished with a game-high 16 kills while hitting .483 from the floor, leading the City College of New York Beavers over the Newbury Nighthawks, 3-0 (25-16, 25-11, 25-17) on Tuesday evening from Pappas Gymnasium.

Myftari also finished with three aces and four total blocks. Junior Carlos Maldonado Madrid (Honduras) added 10 kills and five digs. Sophomore Hei Chun Chan (Flushing, N.Y) added 32 assists.

Nighthawks sophomore Rory Dobbins (Warwick, R.I.) finished with a team-high seven kills. Sophomore Jeremias Soto (Lawrence, Mass.) added three kills and 12 assists.

In the opening set, the Beavers hit .318 with 11 total team kills and used a 7-0 scoring run in the middle of the set to win the first, 25-16. Myftari had five of the 11 overall kills.

In the second, CCNY hit a match-best .583 including 15 overall kills to win the second set, 25-11. The Nighthawks were able to hit .200 from the floor, but couldn't produce enough offense to hold up to the Beavers.

In the final set, CCNY again hit an impressive .379 with 14 kills to sweep the Nighthawks, 25-17, in straight sets. Tied at 10-10, CCNY used a 9-4 scoring run to create the distance necessary for the win.

The Beavers improve to 2-0 while the Nighthawks lose their season-opener and fall to 0-1.

The Nighthawks return to play on Thursday with a 7:00 p.m. match at Wentworth. The Beavers head back to Manhattan to host Wilkes University tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m.
