BROOKLINE, Mass. – Elms College finished the Nighthawks with a straight sets sweep on Saturday at Pappas Gymnasium in the regular season finale for both sides.
Elms won 25-13, 25-15, 25-15 and takes the No. 2 seed into next week's New England Collegiate Conference tournament after finishing the regular season 18-6 overall and 10-2 in league play. Newbury drops to 5-17 overall and 4-8 in the NECC, grabbing the fourth seed.
Jeremy Torres led Elms with 11 kills while hitting .409 and Jovanny Torres flirted with a triple-double, finishing with nine kills, 10 assists, and eight digs while hitting .474. Jake Johnson added six kills on seven attempts for Elms.
In the opening set, Elms used a 5-0 run and 4-0 run to lead 18-9 in the set. Elms hit .419 in the opening set and won the last four points on the way to a 25-13 win.
In the second, Elms jumped out to a 15-5 lead to open the set. The Nighthawks got within five at one point, but Elms used a 6-1 scoring run to pull away to a 25-15 set win.
In the final set, the Blazers again took a quick lead, opening the set with an 11-4 lead. Elms hit .435 in the third, winning the set 25-15.
The Nighthawks face the top-seeded Endicott Gulls on Thursday evening in the semifinals of the NECC Playoffs.
