GAME ONE: Newbury 3 - Lesley 0
BROOKLINE, Mass. - Nighthawks freshman Trevor Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) finished with a match-high 11 kills, leading the Nighthawks to a straight sets (25-6, 25-14, 25-11) victory over the Lesley Lynx in the first match of a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Friday at Pappas Gymnasium.
Lynx sophomore Andrew Medeiros finished with a team-high two kills. Junior Karuna Chiemruom (Cranston, R.I.) added a kill and a team-best six kills.
In the opening set, the Nighthawks hit .304 from the floor and pulled away with two separate 7-0 scoring runs to take the first set 25-6.
In the second, the Nighthawks and Lynx battled to a 6-6 tie. The Nighthawks took control with a 7-1 run on the way to a 25-14 second set win. The Nighthawks hit .280 in the second set.
In the final set, the Nighthawks jumped out to a 7-0 lead to open the set. A 12-3 run later in the set would put the set out of reach with a 25-11 Nighthawks win.
GAME TWO: Newbury 3 - Lesley 0
BROOKLINE, Mass. - Nighthawks freshman Trevor Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) finished with 10 kills and a career-high 16 digs, as the Nighthawks defeated the Lesley Lynx 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-15), sweeping the doubleheader and clinching a playoff berth in the NECC Playoffs.
Nighthawks freshman Rory Dobbins (Riverside, R.I.) finished with eight kills on nine attempts, hitting .889 from the floor. For the day, Dobbins had 16 kills on 19 attempts with no errors. Sophomore Oscar Chavez (Independence, Ore.) finished with seven kills.
Lynx freshman Alexander Genova (Groton, Mass.) finished with a team-high six kills. Junior John Gersbeck (Westerly, R.I.) added five kills.
In the opening set, the Nighthawks grabbed momentum with a 6-0 run to lead 7-4. The Nighthawks stretched their lead throughout the set and scored the final four points to take the opening set 25-14.
In the second set, a Nighthawks 6-0 run to open the set was answered by the Lynx who tied the match 6-6 with their own scoring run. The Nighthawks answered back with an 18-4 run and finished off the set on a Thorne kill for a 25-14 set win.
In the final set, the Nighthawks hit a blazing .478 from the floor on the way to a straight set sweep and third set win of 25-15.
The Nighthawks improve to 5-16 (4-7 NECC) while the Lynx fall to 0-13 (0-8 NECC).
The Nighthawks finish the regular season with Senior Day tomorrow against Elms College at 1:00 p.m. from Pappas Gymnasium.
