CHICOPEE, Mass. - Blazers freshman Martin Acevedo (Carolina, P.R.) led the Blazers with 12 kills without an error, hitting .667 on the night, leading the Elms Blazers to a 3-0 (25-9, 25-10, 25-13) win over the Newbury Nighthawks on Thursday evening from Picknelly Arena in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Acevedo added nine digs, coming up one shy of a double-double. John Dunphy (Farmington, Conn.) had 16 assists and Kahlil Peters (Hartford, Conn.) added 11 assists, helping Elms hit .350 as a team in the win.
In the opening set, the Blazers scored 12 of the first 13 points to lead 12-1. Elms hit .393 from the floor in the set on the way to the 25-9 win.
In the second, the Blazers opened the set with the first six points. The Nighthawks cut to within four but a 10-1 scoring run by Elms gave them a 21-8 lead on the way to a 25-10 win. Elms hit a match-best .423 in the second.
In the final set, it was the closing moments that separated the Blazers, as they scored the last seven points to win the third set 25-13.
The win moves the Blazers to 14-6 (7-2 NECC) while the loss drops the Nighthawks to 3-16 (2-7 NECC).
Newbury returns to play on Saturday with a doubleheader against Lesley University starting at 11:00 a.m. The Nighthawks will celebrate the career of Joshua Thorne before the beginning of the opening match.
