FRANKLIN, Mass. - Bulldogs freshman Diondre Gomes (Fairhaven, Mass.) finished with a match-high 18 kills, leading the Dean Bulldogs to a 3-0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-20) victory over the Newbury Nighthawks on Tuesday evening in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Bulldogs senior Moussa Seck (Medford, Mass.) finished with five kills, hitting a match-high .556. Freshman Joel Carmona (Lawrence, Mass.) finished with five kills and a match-best and career-high 16 digs.
In the opening set, Dean jumped out to a big lead at 12-4. The Bulldogs finished the set hitting .391 from the floor on the way to the 25-10 set win.
In the second, the Bulldogs were out quickly again, this time to a 10-4 lead. The Nighthawks got no closer than five points and a Dean service ace gave them the second set win 25-13.
In the final set, the Nighthawks and Bulldogs battled early to a 13-13 tie. But, Dean took the momentum with a 6-1 scoring run to lead 19-14. The Nighthawks battled back with five of seven points to trail 21-19. The Bulldogs held off the Nighthawks as a Carmona kill and Nighthawks error gave the Bulldogs the 25-20 set win.
The Bulldogs improve to 13-8 (6-3 NECC) while the Nighthawks fall to 3-15 (2-6 NECC).
The Nighthawks return on Thursday as they travel to Elms College for a 5:00 p.m. match.
