BROOKLINE, Mass. - Nighthawks freshmen Trevor Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) and Rory Dobbins (Riverside, R.I.) finished with nine kills each as the Nighthawks defeated the Southern Vermont Mountaineers 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-19) on Thursday evening at Pappas Gymnasium in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Trevor Thorne added a career-high 13 digs on the night while Dobbins hit a match-best .538. Senior Joshua Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) finished with seven kills and freshman Michael Weston (West Greenwich, R.I.) added five kills.
Mountaineers senior El Olivares (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore Te Hayward (Baltimore, Md.) each finished with nine kills. Olivares added a team-high 11 digs.
In the opening set, both sides battled closely through the middle of the set to a 12-12 tie. The Nighthawks took control with an 8-1 scoring run to lead 20-13. The Mountaineers cut the deficit to three late in the set by a kill by Joshua Thorne ended the set at 25-21.
In the second set, the Nighthawks grabbed control with five straight points to lead 9-6. Newbury maintained a hold on the second set and broke open the scoring in the late portions, scoring the final five points to win 25-15.
In the final set, the Mountaineers battled back from an early deficit to a 13-13 tie. Six out of the next eight points went to the Nighthawks as they grabbed momentum to lead 19-15. The Mountaineers ran out of time and an ace from Nighthawks freshman Alvin Fernandez (Taunton, Mass.) finished the set 25-19, giving the Nighthawks the straight set win.
"We were able to stay aggressive through the entire match," said Head Coach Peter Kazlas. "We can use this win as a jumping off point for the rest of our season and take some positive momentum down the stretch."
The Nighthawks improve to 3-12 (2-4 NECC) while the Mountaineers fall to 0-13 (0-7 NECC).
The Nighthawks and Mountaineers continue their seasons on Saturday when Newbury travel to Endicott for a 1:00 p.m. match and the Mountaineers host the Eastern Nazarene Lions at 1:00 p.m.
