BROOKLINE, Mass. - The Gulls offense rolled, finishing the match with 46 kills while hitting .405 from the floor, as the Endicott Gulls remained perfect in New England Collegiate Conference by virtue of a 3-0 (25-10, 25-18, 25-14) victory over the Newbury Nighthawks on Wednesday evening at Pappas Gymnasium.
Gulls senior Troy Riorden (Fairport, N.Y.), junior Jeremy Doski (Sandy Hook, Conn.), and sophomore Tim Fiesler (Bridgewater, N.J.) all finished with seven kills. Doski hit .455 on the evening, best of the trio.
Nighthawks freshmen Trevor Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) and Alvin Fernandez (Taunton, Mass.) each ended the night with four kills. Freshman Rory Dobbins (Riverside, R.I.) added four blocks. Thorne hit .333 from the floor.
In the opening set, the Gulls finished with 14 kills, hitting .476 on the way to a 25-10 first set win. The Nighthawks and Gulls started the match close but a 7-0 Endicott run would ultimately propel the Gulls to the win.
In set two, the Gulls produced 18 kills, but their seven errors allowed the Nighthawks to stay within striking distance. Newbury was within one at 11-10 but a 6-1 run gave Endicott control at 17-12. The errors wouldn't hurt the Gulls as they were able to hold off the Nighthawks to a 25-18 set win.
In the final set, Endicott hit a match-best .542 from the floor, dispatching the Nighthawks 25-14. An early 5-0 lead would create enough room for the Gulls. Another run of 8-1 would expand the Gulls lead later in the set.
The win moves the Gulls to 14-1 (5-0 NECC) while the Nighthawks loss drops them to 2-10.
The Nighthawks return to play on Saturday, hosting a tri-match against Dean and Mount Ida. The Gulls also continue their season on Saturday as they host Elms College at 1:00 p.m.
