The Newbury College men's volleyball team finished the 2013 season with a loss to Endicott College, 3-0 (17-25, 22-25, 15-25), this afternoon in Brookline, MA. Junior, Carter Roche (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) lead the way for the Gulls, dishing out 31 assists, 4 kills, 4 digs and 2 blocks.
Endicott jumped out to an early lead in the first set, hitting .407 as a team with 15 kills. Alex Wasik (Mildford, MA/Milford) and Matt Devendorf (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) powered the Gulls to victory with four kills a piece in the set, gaining the 1-0 advantage 25-17.
The Nighthawks came alive in the second set taking the lead for the middle portion of the set, before Endicott took control late and finished the set 25-22. Jake Powell (Salinas, CA/Palma), reigning NECC Rookie of the Week, knocked down 7 kills on just 12 attempts for a .417 attack percentage for Newbury but it was not enough to pull even with the Gulls.
In the third set, Endicott completed the 3-0 sweep with a 25-18 victory to finish a perfect 12-0 in conference play. Leading the way for the Gulls was outside hitter John Osborne (Freehold, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) as he knocked down five kills on just eight attempts for a .556 hitting percentage.
Despite the loss, the Nighthawks Powell finished with a match high 16 kills, while teammate Cody Braden (Fair Grove, MO/Fair Grove) dished out a team high 26 assists.
Newbury completes their season 8-13 overall, 5-7 in the NECC, while Endicott finishes 20-8 overall and 12-0 in the NECC. Prior to the start of the match, Newbury honored their three seniors, Alex Amylon (Scituate, RI/Scituate), Jeremy Bergeron (Fitchburg, MA/Montachusett Regional) and Jarryl McKey (Brooklyn, NY/Fredrick Douglas Academy) as they played in their final home game of their careers and for their hard work and dedication to the men's volleyball program.
