INDIANAPOLIS - The NCAA announced Monday afternoon that the New England Collegiate Conference Champion Newbury College Nighthawks will travel to the State University of New York at Cortland for the First Round Match in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer National Tournament.
The Nighthawks appear in their first NCAA Tournament in program history while the Red Dragons earned an at-large bid out of the State University of New York Athletic Conference, following a loss to the College of Brockport in the SUNYAC Championship match.
It's the first time since 2015 that an NECC Champion has been pulled out of the New England region for the National Tournament. The 2015 NECC Champions, Daniel Webster, traveled to Montclair State in New Jersey for their First Round Match.
Newbury earned the NECC Automatic Qualifier by virtue of a 1-0 overtime victory against Mitchell College on Sunday afternoon. The game-winning overtime goal was the second-latest game-winner scored in the history of the NECC Championship.
The Red Dragons enter the National Tournament for the third straight season. In both 2016 and 2017, SUNY Cortland won their First Round Match before being bounced in the following game each year.
As of Oct. 28, SUNY Cortland is ranked the No. 6 team in Division III and No. 2 in the East Region.
The Nighthawks and Red Dragons face off Saturday, Nov. 10 at 5:00 p.m. and will face the winner of Williams College and Elizabethtown College on Sunday.
