BANGOR, Maine - Nighthawks freshman Ryan Gonzales (Portsmouth, N.H.) scored his first career goal, a header coming off a corner kick, leading the Nighthawks to a 1-0 victory over the Husson Eagles on Wednesday evening at Boucher Field in non-conference play.
In the 87th minute, Nighthawks freshman Rony Morales (Seekonk, Mass.) kicked an out swinging corner which was met by Gonzales who was making a run from the far post. Gonzales's header from 10 yards was nearly cleared off the line, but the header found its way into the side netting, giving the Nighthawks the 1-0 lead.
The goal marks the second time in five days the Nighthawks have used a goal in the 87th minute to take a lead. Last Saturday, the Nighthawks scored in the 87th minute against Elms to win 2-1 in their conference opener.
The Eagles had a late chance with seconds remaining with senior Dylan Bryce (Smithsburg, Md.) sending a cross into the Nighthawks box. The cross was briefly spilled by Nighthawks goalie Samuel Quinones (San Diego, Calif.) but he gathered the rebound, securing the victory.
Quinones made seven saves on the night, earning the win and improving to 2-0. Quinones starts the season with a pair of clean sheets and is the first Nighthawks goalie since William McNally in 2011 with back-to-back shutouts.
Husson junior Kyle Townsend (Hampden, Maine) made four saves on the night but falls to 2-4-1 with the loss.
The Nighthawks are on a three-game winning streak, improving to 4-2-1 this season. The last three-game winning streak for Newbury came in late-September 2016.
The Nighthawks return to play on Saturday, traveling to Southern Vermont for a match at noon. The Nighthawks seek their first 2-0 start in the New England Collegiate Conference since 2015.
