BOSTON, Mass. - Nighthawks freshman Rony Morales (Seekonk, Mass.) scored his first career goal and added an assist, providing the offensive help needed, as the Nighthawks broke through for their first victory of the season, a 2-0 win over the Emmanuel Saints on Wednesday night at Roberto Clemente Field.
Nighthawks junior Samuel Quinones (San Diego, Calif.) claimed his first win in a Nighthawks uniform, keeping a clean sheet with a pair of saves in his 90 minutes.
The scoring started in the 38th minute with the Saints committing a foul in the box, leading to a Nighthawks penalty kick. Morales stepped to the spot and converted from 12 yards out, giving the Nighthawks a 1-0 lead.
The Saints would be handed another blow in the 69th minute as a red card was shown for a foul on Nighthawks freshman Kobe Barnes (Hartford, Conn.), who looked to be on a breakaway before being fouled.
Despite being down to 10 men, the Saints had a golden opportunity in the 74th minute when Emmanuel freshman Robert Danielian (Watertown, Mass.) found himself free in the box and struck the crossbar with a header off a corner kick. The Nighthawks cleared their line to hold the 1-0 lead.
The Nighthawks added insurance in the 82nd minute on a rebound goal by freshman Albert Baraka (Congo Bukavu, DR). Morales originated the chance with a shot that was turned away, but Baraka made no mistake on the rebound, giving Newbury the 2-0 edge.
Quinones is the first Nighthawks goalie since 2016 to record a win and shutout in their debut. He moves to 1-0 this season. Saints junior Jonathan Ferrarini (Hanover, Mass.) made six saves on the night but falls to 1-1 with the loss.
Newbury now sits at 1-1-1 while the Saints go to 1-1-0. The Nighthawks return to play on Saturday evening as they welcome the Salve Regina Seagulls to Hormel Stadium in Medford. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
