Nighthawks, Buccaneers Battle to 3-3 Draw

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - Trailing 2-0 after 43 minutes in the first half, the Massachusetts Maritime Buccaneers came from behind twice, en route to a 3-3 draw on Monday evening against the Newbury Nighthawks for Clean Harbor Stadium.

Nighthawks sophomore Warren Exceus (Boston, Mass.) and junior Stanley Elie (Boston, Mass.) both scored their first goals of the 2018 campaign.

Bucs sophomores Brady Lemmon (California, Md.) and Ben Cook (Ft. Myers, Fla.) and junior Stephen Froio (Auburn, Mass.) all scored on the evening.

The Nighthawks struck first with an own goal to lead 1-0. A shot by junior Julio Arreola (San Diego, Calif.) deflected off a Buccaneer defender to begin the scoring. The Nighthawks doubled the lead in the 43rd minute on Exceus' goal.

Seconds later and still in the 43rd minute, the Buccaneers broke through with Lemmon's goal off an assist from Shane MacNeil to go to the half trailing 2-1.

Massachusetts Maritime would draw even in the 53rd minute on a defensive mistake by the Nighthawks. Lemmon intercepted a pass on the Nighthawks back line, passed to Cook, who tied the game at 2-2.

The Nighthawks looked to have recovered in the 71st minute, taking a 3-2 lead on Elie's game-leading goal.

But seven minutes later, in the 78th, Froio tied the game at 3-3 on a cross into the box from the right side.

The 20-minute overtime periods couldn't break the tie, despite the offense the Bucs produced in that time.

Nighthawks senior Jarrod Smith (Watertown, N.Y.) made 12 saves on the evening. Bucs freshman Mitch Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.) finished with five stops.

The Nighthawks move to 0-1-1 while the Bucs go to 1-0-1. Newbury returns to play on Wednesday as they travel to Emmanuel for a 7:00 p.m. kick.
