BENNINGTON, Vt. - Sophomore forward Nilton De Andrade (Boston, Mass.) registered a hat trick and added an assist in the 4-0 #5 Newbury College (5-14) win over #4 Southern Vermont College (5-15) in the first round of the New England Collegiate Conference tournament. The Nighthawks will travel to #1 Mitchell College on Friday for a 2:00pm kickoff.
De Andrade commenced his goal-scoring barrage in the 30th minute when he riffled a shot just to the right of the Mountaineer freshman keeper Dylan Berg (Tampa, Fla.). Newbury carred a 13-2 shot advantage into halftime, leading 1-0.
Sophomore forward Alex Strafer recorded his fifth goal of the season on a De Andrade feed from the left side to expand the lead to 2-0 in the 56th minute. Five minutes later, De Andrade returned to the scoring column with another strike to the left side of the goal.
In the 78th minute, De Andrade would take the free kick from just outside the box and curled the ball past the four-man SVC wall to find the upper right corner of the goal. De Andrade's three goals gives him a team-lead 15 for the season.
For the match, Newbury outshot the Mountaineers 23-8 while sophomore Nighthawk keeper Chris Tran (Nantucket, Mass.) improved to 3-3 on the season stopping five SVC shots to record the clean sheet. The Nighthawk defense was stout for 90 minutes, led by seniors Michael Walker (St. Croix, USVI) and Kyle Soares (Acushnet, Mass.) and sophomore Andrew Kalombo (Worester, Mass.).
The return trip to New London, Conn. for Newbury will mark the second time in less than a week that the Nighthawks and Mariners will meet. Mitchell won last Saturday's meeting 5-1. The NECC semifinal match will pair the top-two teams from the NECC preseason poll.
