MEDFORD, Mass. - Nighthawks senior Tank Roberson (Pittsfield, Mass.) stuffed the stat sheet, finishing the game with 27 points, six rebounds, four steals, and two assists, leading the Newbury Nighthawks to their fourth-straight win in February via an 88-70 win over the Lesley University Lynx on Wednesday night in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Roberson played 32 minutes, shooting 9-of-22 from the floor and 6-of-8 from the line. Senior Pierce Weatherspoon (Hartford, Conn.) finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Sophomores Tim Deng (Portland, Maine) and Brendan Miller (Tampa, Fla.) each finished with 12 points. For Miller, that matched a season-high.
Lynx sophomore Chase Howard (San Diego, Calif.) finished with a team-high 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Junior Trayvon Trent (Virginia Beach, Va.) finished with 15 points while senior Joey Martin (Melbourne, Fla.) added 14 points.
An even game through the first four minutes, the Nighthawks struck with a 12-3 run to take a 25-16 lead after 8:00 of play. Newbury led by as many as 11 in the first half on the way to a seven-point lead, 41-34 after 20 minutes of play. Roberson had 16 points in 18 minutes at the half.
The Nighthawks came out firing in the second half, extending their lead with a 16-6 run in the opening 5:57 of the half to lead 57-40. Newbury continued to widen the gap, using a 13-1 run later in the half to lead by their biggest margin, 24 points at 70-46.
Newbury coasted to the 18-point win, 88-70 while holding the Lynx to 31.9 percent shooting on the night. The Nighthawks shot 47.1 percent from the field.
The win moves the Nighthawks to 10-13 (6-9 NECC) while the loss drops the Lynx to 2-22 (1-14 NECC).
The Nighthawks return to play on Saturday with their season finale, hosting Becker College at 1:00 p.m. Not only will the game mark Senior Day for the Nighthawks, but the winner could be in line for the final playoff spot in the NECC Postseason.
