BROOKLINE, Mass. - Mariners senior Steffen Brunson (West Haven, Conn.) knocked down a pair of game-deciding free throws with 7.4 seconds left, as the Mitchell Mariners escaped with a 74-73 win over the Newbury Nighthawks on Saturday afternoon from Pappas Gymnasium in New England Collegiate Conference play.

Brunson finished with a season-high 26 points, including a perfect 10-of-10 from the line. Sophomore Landon Peabody (Waterford, Conn.) added 12 points off the bench while junior Marvin Baker (Navarre, Fla.) chipped in 11 points off the bench.

Nighthawks sophomore Tim Deng (Portland, Maine) scored a team-high 20 points to go with a game-high 13 rebounds. Senior Omar Williams (Queens, N.Y.) scored 16 points while freshman Francisco Santiago (New Britain, Conn.) scored 15 points.

The Mariners led by two in the final minute but Nighthawks junior Wayne Massey (Gwynn Oak, Md.) made a game-leading three-pointer from the top of the arc, giving the Nighthawks a 73-72 lead.

In the Mariners final possession, Brunson was fouled by Williams, sending the Mariners guard to the line for a chance at the lead.

After converting his two shots to give Mitchell a 74-73 lead, the Nighthawks had one final chance with Santiago getting a good look on a driving shot from the right corner. His attempt was long and time expired before Newbury could control the rebound.

The Mariners led by as many as 11 in the first half, but the Nighthawks used an 11-2 run to cut the deficit before the half. The Nighthawks did hold a six-point lead in the second half, but the Mariners responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead.

The win moves the Mariners to 7-4 (2-1 NECC) while the loss drops the Nighthawks to 2-6 (0-2 NECC).

Newbury returns to play on Tuesday as they welcome Southern Vermont to Pappas Gymnasium for a 5:00 p.m. game.
