HENNIKER, N.H. - Pilgrims freshman Jamal Allen (Dorchester, Mass.) scored a career-high 22 points, coming off the New England College bench, as the Pilgrims defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 95-82 on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Allen scored his game-high 22 points in just 14 minutes, shooting 7-of-15 from the field and 5-of-12 from three. Senior Ricky Leonard (Windsor, Conn.) scored 17 points with four made shots from beyond the arc. Sophomore Calvin Cheek (Mattapan, Mass.) finished with 11 points, six assists, six steals, and five rebounds.
Nighthawks sophomore Tim Deng (Portland, Maine) scored a team-high 20 points on 7-for-9 shooting, including a career-best 3-for-3 from distance. Senior Pierce Weatherspoon (Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Brendan Miller (Tampa, Fla.) each finished with 12 points. Senior Omar Williams (Queens, N.Y.) had 11 points off the bench.
The Nighthawks held a 50-49 lead with 15:19 remaining but the Pilgrims sprinted away, using a 28-7 run over the span of 7:52 to lead 77-57, midway through the second half. Allen scored 14 points in the run, shooting 5-of-9 from the floor and 3-for-7 from beyond the arc.
Newbury could only get as close as 12 in the final minutes as the Pilgrims picked up their second-straight win, 95-82.
The win moves the Pilgrims to 6-1 (2-0 NECC) while the loss drops the Nighthawks to 2-5 (0-1 NECC).
Newbury heads to Winter Break and will return on Dec. 29 when they face SUNY Delhi at the MCLA Tournament at 5:00 p.m.
