MARSHFIELD, Mass. - Nighthawks senior Omar Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) and freshman Francisco Santiago (New Britain, Conn.) are off to blazing starts to open the 2018-2019 basketball season and have earned the New England Collegiate Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the NECC Office on Tuesday morning.
Williams averaged 39.5 points per game in the first two games of the Nighthawks season. He started the season by dropping 35 points in a win over Rivier and then followed up with a program-record 44-point performance in an overtime win over Curry. Williams shot 20-of-48 (41.7%) from the field and made 33-of-38 (86.8%) foul shots. He also averaged 6.5 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.
Santiago began his collegiate career at Newbury by averaging 16.5 points in his first pair of games. Santiago shot 12-for-23 (52.2%) from the floor, including 6-for-13 (46.2%) from behind the arc. Santiago added an average of 2.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals in the Nighthawks two wins.
The Nighthawks started the season 2-0 for the first time in over two decades and will go for a 3-0 start when they battle Clark University on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
