PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Panthers junior Mike Osgood (Nashua, N.H.) scored a game-high 32 points on 12-of-19 shooting leading the Plymouth State Panthers to a non-conference win over the Newbury Nighthawks 96-86 on Thursday evening from Foley Gymnasium.
Panthers sophomore Jaylen Leroy (Manchester, Conn.) added 28 points, including 4-for-8 from beyond the arc. Junior Chase Soares (Falmouth, Mass.) finished with a career-high 13 assists.
Nighthawks senior Daivon Edwards (Roxbury, Mass.) finished with 22 points, including six made shots from deep. Senior Jeduan Langston (Roxbury, Mass.) scored 21 points and eight rebounds while freshman Wayne Massey (Gwynn Oak, Md.) scored 15 points off the bench.
The Panthers opened the game on an 8-2 run but the Nighthawks responded immediately with a 9-3 run to tie the game at 11-11.
Osgood was sharp in the first half, helping spark an 11-1 run in the middle of the half to give the Panthers a 33-27 lead. Osgood scored eight points in the run as Plymouth State led 44-37 at the half.
The Nighthawks pulled within a possession early in the second half, but the Panthers stretched their lead with a 12-2 run to lead by 13. Leroy was 3-of-3 from deep in the run that put the Panthers ahead 56-43.
Newbury cut the deficit to seven on multiple occasions throughout the middle of the second half, but the Panthers held off the Nighthawks while making clutch free throws down the stretch to take the win, 96-86.
The win brings the Panthers to 8-12 (0-9 LEC) while the loss drops the Nighthawks to 4-13 (2-7 NECC).
The Nighthawks return to play on Saturday in a critical game for playoff seeding as they travel to Elms College for a 3:00 p.m. tip.
