BROOKLINE, Mass. - Mariners junior Domineco Santiago (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) scored a career-high 33 points on 15-of-18 shooting and added 11 rebounds in on 27 minutes as the Mitchell Mariners defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 98-77 on Saturday afternoon at Pappas Gymnasium in New England Collegiate Conference play.
Not to be overshadowed was Mariners senior Alan Morgan (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) who finished with 16 assists to go along with eight points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Hasani Williams (Miramar, Fla.) finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Senior Brayvon Young (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) added 18 points.
Nighthawks senior Jeduan Langston (Roxbury, Mass.) scored a team-high 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting while pulling in seven rebounds. Classmate Daivon Edwards (Roxbury, Mass.) added 17 points and six rebounds. Freshman Keith Hollman (Cambridge, Mass.) scored a career-high 12 points on 6-of-11 shooting.
Both sides were out of the gates early to a 12-12 tie in the opening 4:24 in what looked like would be a run-and-gun game. The first half was highly competitive as neither side led by more than four points in the last 15 minutes. A 6-0 run to end the half for the Mariners would give them a 41-38 head to the half. Santiago scored 19 points on 8-for-9 shooting in the opening half.
The Mariners then started the second half on another 6-0 run which gave them breathing room and a 47-38 lead. The Nighthawks would fight back to a one-possession game but a Mariners 19-7 run would give them control of the game at 79-60. Young scored nine of his 18 during that span.
The Mariners extended their lead to 25 at it's largest point on their way to the 98-77 road win.
The victory improves the Mariners to 7-7 (3-0 NECC) while the loss drops the Nighthawks to 2-9 (1-2 NECC).
Both teams return to the floor on Tuesday for more NECC play. The Nighthawks travel a short distance to Lesley University for an 8:00 p.m. game while the Mariners return to the Boston area for an 8:30 p.m. tip against Wheelock.
