NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - The Newbury Nighthawks and Lesley Lynx split a pair of games on Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference play from the New England Baseball Complex. Prior to the games, Nighthawks senior Mark Travers (Norwood, Mass.) and David Center (Medford, Mass.) were honored for their four years in the Nighthawks program.
Game One: Newbury 5 - Lesley 3
A two-run home run by junior Brett Cabral (Plymouth, Mass.) would prove vital for Newbury as they took a 5-3 win over Lesley in the opening game.
Lynx senior Vincent Talieiro (Stream Valley, N.Y.) batted 3-for-4 with a run scored while his classmate Nicholas Ferragine (Randolph, N.J.) went 2-for-4.
The Nighthawks broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by junior Nick Dorazio (Oxford, Conn.) to lead 2-1. Newbury added one more run with an RBI single by Paulino.
Cabral added his two-run home run to left field in the fifth inning to give the Nighthawks a 5-1 lead. The home run is Cabral's second of the season.
Those runs proved to be the difference as the Lynx rallied with two outs in the seventh. After back-to-back, two-out singles, junior Javi Martinez (Chelsea, Mass.) cut the deficit to 5-2.
After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Lesley junior Steven DePalma (Albertson, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch to cut the Nighthawks lead to 5-3.
But the Nighthawks got out of the jam with a fly ball to center field, closing the door on the comeback.
Nighthawks senior Mark Travers pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits. The win moves him to 2-4 this season.
Game Two: Lesley 13 - Newbury 9
After spotting the Nighthawks a seven-run lead in the first inning, the Lesley Lynx scored in every inning from the third on, coming from behind in their 13-9 win, forcing a split of the doubleheader.
Lynx junior Javi Martinez went 4-for-6 that included a double and a triple. Senior Ryan Pumphret (Shrewsbury, Mass.) batted 2-for-2, including a two-run home run.
The Nighthawks began the game with five straight singles, including a two-run base hit by Brett Cabral, followed by an RBI single by Presby to lead 3-0.
A Dorazio single made it 4-0 Nighthawks while a two-run double by sophomore Ryan West (Jupiter, Fla.) pushed the lead to 6-0. The Nighthawks added one more run with the help of a Lesley error to lead 7-0 after the first inning.
The Lynx comeback started in the third with a five-run inning and continued into the fourth, as Lesley tied the game 7-7 on Nighthawks miscues.
Lesley took their first lead of the entire afternoon in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Martinez down the left field line, giving the Lynx the 8-7 lead.
The Lynx poured four more runs on in the sixth and despite the Nighthawks mounting a rally to cut the deficit to 12-9, the Lynx added insurance in the seventh, on their was to a 13-9 win.
Lynx senior Daniel O'Donnell Jr. (Clark, N.J.) grabbed the win pitching 6.2 innings. He moves to 3-4 with the win.
The split moves the Nighthawks to 7-22 (4-10 NECC) while the Lynx go to 9-23 (6-8 NECC).
